What to Do If You Break or Chip a Tooth

A broken or chipped tooth can catch you completely off guard—one moment you’re biting into your lunch, playing a casual game of football, or simply going about your day, and the next you’re dealing with a cracked tooth and a jolt of panic.

Even if the damage looks minor, it’s worth taking seriously. What starts as a small chip can develop into a deeper crack over time, potentially exposing the sensitive inner layers of your tooth and leading to pain, infection, or further damage.

First Steps After Breaking a Tooth

If you’ve broken or chipped a tooth, here’s what to do straight away:

  • Rinse gently with warm water to clean the area
  • Save any broken pieces if you can find them—your dentist may be able to use them
  • Avoid chewing on that side to prevent further damage
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if there’s any swelling
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if you need it

If the broken edge feels sharp and is irritating your tongue or cheek, you can cover it temporarily with a piece of sugar-free chewing gum or dental wax until you can see a dentist.
